The G2 has much better and faster focusing and can use all of the lenses available for the G line. Most users prefer the ergonomics of the G2, including the focusing wheel on the front of the camera. The G2 also has a faster maximum shutter speed and a faster flash sync speed. It seems as though you plan to use the G as a glorified P&S, which is fine. But you will soon be amazed that such a compact, lightweight camera can be capable of such wondrous images, and you will be looking for ways to integrate it into your daily work. There are quite a few professionals who prefer the G1/G2 to their SLR equipment. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Hi, I’m thinking about buying Contax G1 or G2 as a casual camera. This means I will not use it for my job (freelance photographer), but for party, take friends’ photos and so on. Please let me know what you like and don’t like about the cameras. Thank you very much. Soh http://soht.home.mindspring.

Soh, Take a peek at this excellent Contax G site: http://contaxg.com/ – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Soh http://soht.home.mindspring.com

I have the G1… bought it in the currently popular promotion "kit" containing the G1, a 35mm f/2 lens and the TLA 140 flash. (Current price everywhere seems to be $799.) The G1 is fantastic! Light, compact, versatile. INCREDIBLE LENSES! (I also bought a used 90mm lens…) If I’d have been able to rationalize the purchase, I’d have bought the G2 just ’cause it’s the latest. The G2 has a few refinements over the G1, but nothing on the G2 is really *necessary* for my uses. The G2 has a faster upper end shutter speed, for instance. Be sure to go to www.contaxcameras.com and a few other sites to review the differences. The real payoff for either the G1 or the G2 is the set of lenses available for these two fine cameras. Sharpness! Wonderful sharpness! Contax has a new zoom lens — not something I want, because I want faster lenses v. a zoom lens. But there are plenty of people chomping at the bit to get this new lens. It was made for the G2. It won’t work on the G1. Keep that in mind if you think you might want that zoom. One other thing to keep in mind…. early G1 cameras are just as good as the later production batches, but the earliest of them weren’t made to accommodate the 35mm lens or (if I remember correctly) the 21mm lens. (You can verify which other lens didn’t work by checking on Contax’s web site.) Anyway, the earlier G1’s have a silver colored sticker lining the film cassette bay. Later G1’s and those updated by Contax have a green sticker in the same place. Some of the photo swap meet guys have the earlier G1’s for sale. They could be a great bargain if they’re sold at the right price. Contax will even upgrade these for free IF you buy a new lens from a dealer. If you buy all the stuff used, it may not be such a hot deal. I’d contact Contax to see what they’d charge to upgrade an older G1 in such an instance. I hope that helps. If you buy either the G1 or the G2, I’m sure you’ll love your purchase. (Be sure that you’re OK with the idea of a rangefinder — and an electronic one at that — though. Some SLR users don’t adapt well to rangefinders. I myself love the things!) -Dave – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Hi, I’m thinking about buying Contax G1 or G2 as a casual camera.
