Rollei Prego 90: any good ?

Question:

The Samsung 140 has a Schneider lens, but the 28-90 does not. Yes the samsung does offer a sneider lens…..found a ritz camera  a zoom of 140mm.  I liked the camera but i shortly exchaned it for a slr. As far as the lens vs. the Samsung, I think it depends on the model.  The Rollei Prego 90 does have a Schneider lens, and the Samsung does not.  I read on one web site that the two cameras (Rollei and Samsung) are made in the far east, and that the Rollei is then shipped to Germany for final assembly and quality control.

The downsides (to me) are the size of the camera (very bulky, even compared to a 38-110) (a problem on all 28-90s) and the viewfinder size (a bit small). The remote is kinda fun to use (optional, about $15).  One great feature is a two second delay–not like a 10 second delay to get in the picture (but it also has that), but to prevent the camera from shaking at slow shutter speeds. Alternatives:  Lots, if you don’t want 28-90mm.  Rollei’s own line includes some compact zoom models, 38-??. Where to buy:  Adorama (www.adorama.com) is where I bought mine from–about $190 for non-date version (I bought mine in the store).  You will have to e-mail them for pricing. B&H carries it, at about $225 Cameraworld (www.cameraworld.com) has it, last time I checked at about $175, but I’ve heard mixed reviews about Cameraworld–although I would have less concerns with a boxed kit, as opposed to an SLR "system". $224 locally isn’t a bad price, depending on shipping costs, taxes, etc. I’m interested in buying a Rollei Prego 90 35 mm P&S (without the date-option of course, that’s just for sissies ;) ). Some questions: 1) Is it any good ? It seems to be: not too much zoom, quite a fast lens for a P&S, most gadgets can be overruled manualy, etc. 2) Is it true that the Samsung Vega-lenses are the same as in Rollei compacts ? Some salesman told me. Maybe he owns Samsung shares… ? 3) What are the alternatives for a good P&S, max. zoom 100 mm, max price $300, fast lens ? 4) Where to buy it cheap, either online or in The Netherlands or Germany ? I can get it in The Netherlands for HFL 485,–, some $ 224,–. Is this a good price ? Answers can also be submitted by e-mail of course. My sister has one, and she loves it. She has a manual SLR with a 50mm f1.2 lens before, and wanted something smaller.  From what I have seen, the pictures were VERY impressive. Very sharp, and very good contrast. I was truely impressed for a P&S zoom, and I liked that it had exposure control.  The one complaint that she has is the viewfinder. she says she has trouble aquiring the image, and its small and hard to see when she does find it. I had to agree that I liked my Styus Epic finder better, but they werent all that different.      Quantum Mechanics…. The dreams stuff is made of.

I bought one for my wife.  It is very good but I wouldn’t rate it as great. At the wide end of things there is some vignetting with obvious darkening of corners and soft edge focus. From near wide –35mm and up–the pics are sharp.  I would recommend 200/400 speed film to maximze shutter speed for handheld shots.
