A lens that is wide is typically a lens that is shorter than the diagonal of the film size. For 35mm, lenses shorter than about 50mm are considered wide. The term wide comes from the fact that they have wider angles of view. Wide angle gets a lot into the photo 90 degrees and non-wide angle less than 90degrees. For example a 15mm fisheye see 180 degrees.
