Hey there Gordo, the Minolta I referred to is a 20-year-old 35mm camera that takes beautiful photos, and I have a couple of nice lenses. I would like to get a flatbed scanner to get some of my photos online, but I suspect there will be a problem with resolution? i can take slides, but I have heard that slide scanners are expensive, and slides are a pain in general. kj

Response:

Kathy, most flatbed scanners should include a tools/setup software bundle that allows you to scan in the image at your choice of resolution settings (the preview pane is lower res) You will have to resize the scan afterwords to get the size of image you want to forward. Scanning at 300 dpi has always served me well. hope this helps… cj—————————— "kjoh" <kjohyay…@nospamyahoo.com> wrote in message

My kids have family portraits taken, which cost an arm and a leg, so they buy one copy that I scan and print for everyone else. We honestly can’t tell the difference between the original and the copy except for the paper. The quality is excellent.

Hi Kathy, To match the quality of high-end photographs, you’ll want to find a high-end scanner (not one of the "free" bonuses you get when you buy a new computer system). HP’s not bad, but you should do some comparisons via the internet before you decide which puppy to bring home. All that said, you may be disappointed in the quality, even with a good scanner, because it will also scan any imperfections in the photo, i.e. dust, scratches, lint, cat fur… that are easy to collect. But, if your use is to put your scanned images on the internet, don’t worry and don’t buy an expensive scanner because you’ll be using low resolution for that purpose. Waterspider p.s. My first scanner was a hand-held thingy about the size of a pack of cigarettes (much fatter though), and you needed a *very* steady hand to roll its four-inch scan reader over the surface you were scanning. It cost me over $400 Cdn.

Response:

Like I said, things have completely changed in the last couple of years. Something like this could be what you’re looking for: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0002U40NG/103-5430849-9735851?v=gla… n=172282&n=172584&s=electronics&v=glance For resolution for pictures you want to put online this should be more than fine. It has a max resolution of 3,200 x 6,400 dpi which is pretty impressive (although the real resolution is just 3,200, the 6,400 is sort of a fake number.) My 6mp camera gives me an image thats roughly 3000 pixels by 2000 pixels. A 35mm slide/negative is roughly 1 x 1.5 so with this scanner you’d get 3200 x 4800 pixels. Monitors display around 72dpi, so that means your 35mm negative is going to be 44in by 66in on the screen. I think that’s more than enough resolution for you to play with. It will also scan prints up to 8.5×11in. It also comes with Photoshop Elements which is a great program. For $123 it seems to be an incredible deal. One thing to keep in mind – computer images take up a lot of space. You might need to get a new hard drive but they’re really cheap now as well. You could also send your film to a lab that would scan the negs for you, doesn’t help you with your old photos but might make it easier with the ones you take now. I don’t do that, but I’ve heard of this place where you can download your photos after sending in film. http://www.clarkcolor.com/welcome/t_=0 I love doing everything digitally, but if you’ve got a setup you like this might make sense. Gordo In article <90ecd97f00868e4ec02a5213c8c81…@localhost.talkaboutsupport.com>, – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text - "kjoh" <kjohyay…@nospamyahoo.com> wrote: > Hey there Gordo, the Minolta I referred to is a 20-year-old 35mm camera > that takes beautiful photos, and I have a couple of nice lenses. I would > like to get a flatbed scanner to get some of my photos online, but I > suspect there will be a problem with resolution? i can take slides, but I > have heard that slide scanners are expensive, and slides are a pain in > general. > kj

Question:

Britta’s wonderful post reminded me of something that we did on a mailing list I belong to a while ago. Someone had posted to the mailing list the details of a really nice trip they took. Just as we have on this newsgroup, that mailing list has members from countries around the world. So I made a suggestion. Everyone on the list couldn’t afford to take a long or exotic vacation, but we all COULD recount our own experiences on things like day trips or little mini-vacations that take place close to (our own) home. Even if those details seem mundane and familiar to US, there are sure to be other members of the group who will find the information to be new and interesting. We got some amazing posts from people, once they started to provide details of even little excursions. So… I’ll suggest the same thing here. Anyone who’s going on even a brief jaunt might want to consider posting the details here, even if they hadn’t originally intended to write about it. Then we can ALL keep having virtual vacations on a regular basis. ) Donna, in need of any sort of vacation, virtual or otherwise ;o)

Well, OK. =) In 1999, I took a vacation with my dad to Big Bend National Park in Texas and a couple places in New Mexico and Arizona, and I took lots of pictures. All I had was a 35mm point-n-shoot, nothing fancy, but it got the job done. The photography-shop lady who developed my film was quite envious of my having been to places where I could take pictures like those. Naturally, the pictures are on my web site: http://web.mr-happy.com/~jfb/ablum/vacation1999/ I think I did a reasonably good job of captioning the pictures, but I didn’t write much about anything I didn’t take a picture of, so I’ll relate one of the more eventful, uhh, events. I think we were about an hour away from Las Cruces, New Mexico, maybe on our way to Silver City, when my dad pulled over to walk the dog (an event I always looked forward to, as having half of a German Shepherd on your lap for several hours can get a bit old). I didn’t even get out of the truck that time, but my dad came to my window and told me, "Shut off the truck… we’re gonna be here awhile." Uh-oh. I got out to see that one of the camper tires was mostly gone, and that which was not gone was utterly shredded. The flailing tire had also ripped up the wheel well, above which is the compartment under the main bed inside the camper… which is where my dad kept the cash stash, among other things. Everything was covered in rubber dust, but nothing seemed to be missing. We didn’t notice the blowout when it happened because the trailer has two axles, so there was still enough support. So on goes the spare trailer tire, and into Las Cruces we go. We somehow managed to find an open tire store on a Sunday, too, so we were hardly even inconvenienced by the whole thing, at least compared to how it could have gone. The best part of it, for sure, was finding the Aguirre Springs National Recreation Area just outside of Las Cruces. We spent two nights there and did a lot of hiking. The elevation made for a nice break, too, as it was cooler there (10-15 C/50s F) than Texas or Arizona were, so the hiking was far easier. (I don’t deal well with heat even when I’m sitting still.) Always good when something crappy turns into a very nice weekend. Anyway, enjoy the pictures. Jeff

Neat places, aren’t they? My memory of the Cochise Stronhold is a bit tainted, though, as we went on some awful 10-mile hike in the desert sun. Early November, 32C/90F, more than I can handle sitting still. But it was still really interesting.
I don’t remember if I saw any in AZ, but the first campground we stayed at in Big Bend was full of them, the one near/in Boquillas Canyon. I got two pictures of them on one hike, too. We went to Sonoran Desert Museum, too, which is really just an enclosed part of the desert, not a building.

Yes! I remember trying to watch for all the hummingbirds in the aviary. I loved that whole place. Jeff

Did you see a roadrunner? I don’t remember if I saw any in AZ, but the first campground we stayed at in Big Bend was full of them, the one near/in Boquillas Canyon. I got two pictures of them on one hike, too.

I got the funniest mental image when you said there was a campground full of roadrunners. ROFL. Katz

Then we can ALL keep having virtual vacations on a regular basis. )

I have a lease car from work, and as such, am contracted to do so many kilometres a year. If I don’t meet or exceed the target, the tax I have to pay on it substantially increases and I end up owing the tax man a small fortune. Last year wasn’t a problem, but the tax man doesn’t seem overly sympathitic regarding the last few months of pregnancy, childbirth and the first few months of a baby’s life and hte effect that has on one’s ability to clock up the km’s. So, in the space of 2 months, I have to do 10,000km of driving. The thought of just chockingthe car up, putting a brick on the gas pedal and coming back in 6 hours or when it runs out of petrol has crossed my mind several times, but I may as well get some *real* distance in too. So, ont he weekend, Joel, Cary and I went for a drive to Mogo along the coast road, travelling through all the coastal towns. Mogo is an old gold mining town and has its own zoo, so Cary got to see very big pussy cats (lions) for the first time in his life. He was more interested in being sick down my shirt…. Then we decided it would be quicker to go back home via the straight flat freeway at 100kphrather than going through the windy little towns at 50kph and stopping at all the traffic lights. So we headed up over the coastal range and the Great Dividing Range to a place where we thought we’d meet the Hume Highway. Unfortunately what we didn’t realise was that this lovely mountain road was actually taking us steadily south as well as west, so we ended up onthe outskirts of Canberra - even further away from home than we were at Mogo. Still, we did get to see some lovely countryside, saw a classic Inland country town, Braidwood, unspoiled by the tourist industry (once the tourist industry gets to a town it filsl with antique shops and "quaint" coffee houses with exhorbitant prices. I want actual genuine small town feel, not ‘quaint’), and got to visit pretty much every Fast Food restaurant along the freeway back as Cary kept filling up his nappy and it was raining so we couldnt’ just drive with the windows open. 498km later, and we got home again, much to our relief. And we have to do that another 20 times before April 1st. *groan*. These are the times I wish Joel (or even Cary!) could drive. Yowie

Julie, Will you be the one wearing a cat T-shirt? <G Seriously, Millington is a bit of a drive since I’m out in Cordova. And driving is not one of my strong suits; I really only drive where I have to when I have to. It’s one of my phobias; don’t know why – I didn’t used to have a problem with it.
Oh I see, this is pure satire. My biggest gripe is wasting 10-minutes to take a picture of the item and write a description then getting e-mail from a previous customer wanting to buy every one I have.

My biggest gripe is wasting 10-minutes to take a picture of the item and write a description then getting e-mail from a previous customer wanting to buy every one I have. This is partially my fault for e-mailing my previous customers and informing them I have seven pallets of new in the box printers up for sale. It’s not fair that eBay sent great customers my way. Now I have ten minutes of my life stolen and a wasted picture and description loaded in TurboLister. http://snipurl.com/ce5q My second gripe is all the worldwide exposure my items get. I can’t stand having the whole world see my merchandise and bid on it. You see I only want to sell to the continental US. This is where eBay should build a wall and close the borders. Another item that plucks my nerve is paying for a 5 or 7-day auction and some bonehead BINs and buys my item in 12-24 hours. I feel eBay should prorate the difference and partially refund my listing fees for not using up all 5 or 7 days. This is highway robbery. Above all, I really hate these freaking criminally and insanely low fees eBay charges me for quickly moving my merchandise. I don’t think it fair eBay delivers such a high sell-thru rate for their sellers. If eBay doesn’t immediately change their discriminating practices I will be forced to list on overstock.com and file a class action suit. A disgruntled eBay seller

What really gets me pissed is when I’m listing some items with BIN. Right after listing, I go to My Ebay to look at the selling list and one item is not there. I had sold already! I bought an old 1977 stereo receiver at a garage sale in 1987 for $30. I used it for all this time, still works perfect. Sold it last Spring for $150. Bought a Yashica T4 Super compact 35mm camera for $150. Used it for 4 years and sold it on ebay for $156. A few years back I wanted a Pentax 50mm f/1.8 lens. They all got bids and were going for $55-75. Found one on a Ricoh camera. The seller did not mention Pentax in the title. I got the lens and a working camera for $36 shipped. Oh, and the lens was in practically new condition. Yep, all this angers me so.

Yep, I know the feeling. This happens to me as well. This is an indication you have buyers actively watching your auctions. I do this with sellers that post items of interest. It’s easier to use bookmarks instead of "watch list" for this.

You can never go wrong buying used merchandise and using it for a while and selling it. It’s like having free rent of the item. Yep, all this angers me so.

This has me pissed as well. I think I’m going to open an account on overstock.com tomorrow. Rita

I agree! As surely as the sun will rise, someone with the mistaken idea that they were clever was bound to attempt a "satire" of eBay complaints and come off looking like the utterly talentless hack that they are. By the way, are you Daniel J. Levine or did you get his permission to use "disgruntled.com" for an email address or did you also show your astounding brain power by using a TLD which is registered and belongs to someone else?

LOL! You’re lucky this was an open-mic show and you weren’t charged a cover. Any and all complaints should be directed to the shipping & receiving department, as the complaint department is temporarily unavailable due to overload.
I’m wondering how much longer 35mm 4-perf theatrical will be around. 70mm 5-perf is pretty much dead already, with only IMAX (70mm 15-perf) holding its own in release of new titles.

I have a feeling they will linger on for decades to come. Look at all these little secondary dollar matinees (really $2) that have popped up using old equipment showing current movies. I’m astonished to see that the 16mm secondary market is still alive: <http://www.modernsoundpictures.com

Now, that is pretty neat. I saw on one of the cable channels were a gentleman had a large theater in his basement built around all the old projection equipment and seating. It was really amazing. After seeing that I would prefer that style to the new home theaters being offered currently, from a strictly nostalgic standpoint.
I was wondering why the 16mm market survives. It might in part be due to the exhibiting organizations not being willing to upgrade to modern video projection equipment, but my suspicion is that this market is an "IP niche" – an artifact of the licensing terms on retail movie media. See: <http://www.modernsoundpictures.com/FHWP.html If the Modern’s clients want to show a recent movie to their org, they can’t just rent a DVD at BlockBuster, strictly speaking. The terms on retail media exclude such exhibitions. The 16mm secondary market, easily over half a century old, was set up to manage its own media that *is* specifically licensed for such exhibition (and which guarantees that the studios get their cut). Notice, for example, that a one-time showing of "The Incredibles" is $250. Needless to say, your local Pixar fan club probably doesn’t go the legit route, runs the BlockBuster media instead, and keeps to a low profile. Also interesting is that Modern doesn’t offer anything but 16mm and VHS. No DVD. — http://www.access-one.com/rjn email4rjn AT yahoo DOT com NOT speaking for any employer, client or Internet Service Provider.

The big difference between LaserDisc and DVD is that it’s painless to make a next-generation player compatible with current DVDs. Sure, there will be better-quality versions of a lot of the DVDs we currently own–but there will be no shortage of hardware on which to play current DVDs anytime soon.

The result will be that SD-DVD titles will be downgraded, as mono LP titles were when stereo came out in 1958 (moreso, actually).

I have CDs from the early 80s that are probably downgraded by the re-release of the "new and improved" versions. No matter, they still sound great and I won’t be buying new ones. This goes for DVDs as well. The music and movie industry are quickly reaching the point of diminishing returns. With this in mind, what is the best way for the first time eBay buyer to stream through all the sources out there? My friends and I were discussing region 1, but I’m sure that this is the same situation for anywhere in the world, no? How does the consumer protect himself/herself from bootlegs? I’d like to hear your ideas. It’s really tough to beat Columbia House for DVDs if you use the enrollment codes. Read about it here: http://www.dvdtalk.com/forum/showthread.php?s=a336c65c5f910516be8433a… I’ve been in and out 8 or 10 times, and have always paid less than $10 each for brand-new DVDs delivered to my door, and often less than $9. They’re not "club editions" or anything like that; they’re exactly the DVDs you buy at the store. They don’t have *everything* you can buy at Best Buy or Amazon, but they do have an awful lot of it. It’s a great way to build a huge library. — http://hiwaay.net/~williams/

But once the BluRay or HD-DVDs hit the shelves, today’s DVDs will be in the remainder bins with the LaserDiscs. The big difference between LaserDisc and DVD is that it’s painless to make a next-generation player compatible with current DVDs.

Indeed. We’ll be able to read/play 99% of common 120mm polycarbonate formats into the indefinite future. The only one lost along the way is the 5-minute analog SD-TV content on CDV-5 media. (SD: Standard Definition) Sure, there will be better-quality versions of a lot of the DVDs we currently own–but there will be no shortage of hardware on which to play current DVDs anytime soon.

Hollywood will be salivating at the prospect of remastering all possible SD-TV content for HD-TV. Where they can go back to film source elements or HD video source elements, expect the (SD) DVD titles to be disco’d, replaced by HD-DVD titles. They’d love it for everyone to upgrade their libraries from SD to HD. The result will be that SD-DVD titles will be downgraded, as mono LP titles were when stereo came out in 1958 (moreso, actually). By the way, if HD-DVD is done half-vast adequately, the theatre owners need to be VERY nervous, because HD will allow a home theatre experience superior in almost every respect to typical, or even "THX-cert" 35mm projection. — http://www.access-one.com/rjn email4rjn AT yahoo DOT com NOT speaking for any employer, client or Internet Service Provider.

If the seller has a bunch of buy it nows that sound too good to be true, don’t buy from them. Especially watch out for China and Hong Kong. Most of the DVDs you see that fit this description are not just the Chinese version, they are bootlegs. mjoann

Check out some of your local pawnshops for used DVDs as they generally have a great selection for $5.00 each and sometimes cheaper when you buy in small quantities. Buying DVDs on eBay can be tricky with so many bootlegs listed. I would probably consider only buying DVD titles on eBay that I can’t buy locally. Rita

(eg: 12:01 am to 06:00 am)? What currency? Where do you live (State/Prov/Territory, Country)? Are there particular conditions or limitations that are of concern or notable? Your comments: Thanks for your time, Cheers, Alan

Having sold a bit of Nikon and Canon gear I would tell you to got the separate route. The prices of film cameras now days is terrible though.

I was actually surprised how good it was. I saw X-700 bodies going for around $100. I figured they’d be well below that. Sure, it’s a fraction of what I paid 14 years ago, but it’s better than nothing, which is what it’s worth sitting in the closet where it’s been for the past four years. — Craig Wagner, craig.wagner(at)comcast.net Portland, OR "Don’t ban high-performance vehicles, ban low-performance drivers!"

Response:

I don’t want to wait that long. Nor, quite frankly, do I have the time to do that much research into it. Unfortunately I have one of those annoying j-o-b things that takes up a lot of my time. And probably pays you a lot more than selling the camera will.

Oh yeah. I still have the original receipt for the camera. I paid almost $1500 CDN for the whole package in 1995. The receipt was printed on a dot matrix printer. As I’ve stated many times in the past, I sell my own personal stuff that I no longer need. I "lose money" on every sale because most of the stuff I bought new for my own personal use. But I get something that is just taking up space out of the house and put a few bucks in my pocket, so I’m happy and someone gets something they want at a good price so they’re happy. It sounds like you are approaching this task with a healthy dose of pragmatism — sensible, but it will bring you into conflict with some of this newsgroup’s regulars.

In this particular incident I don’t see putting up separate listings to be significantly more difficult than a single listing, and doing a couple hours of research is worth it as well. Much more than that just to maybe get an extra $20 isn’t worth it. — Craig Wagner, craig.wagner(at)comcast.net Portland, OR "Don’t ban high-performance vehicles, ban low-performance drivers!"

In thin markets, unpredictable prices are normal. When you believe you’ve done as much research as is warranted, list, take your chances, and move on.

Hi Craig, fancy seeing you here!

Uh, okay. I did that before posting the question. The problem was that prices were all over the map. I saw body-only going for anywhere from $125 to $40. Both sellers described the body in the same way ("like new"), but we know how much that can vary ("it’s like new except the film won’t advance"). Were those active listings or completed auctions?

Completed. Looking at active listings doesn’t tell me anything as the price can change dramatically in the last hour (or sometimes minute) of the auction. print out the page. In a month or two you will have some really good data on what these items currently *sell* for on eBay, much better data

I don’t want to wait that long. Nor, quite frankly, do I have the time to do that much research into it. Unfortunately I have one of those annoying j-o-b things that takes up a lot of my time. And you just never know on eBay. All you need is two bidders who both want to have *that* particular item and suddenly the price goes way up. — Craig Wagner, craig.wagner(at)comcast.net Portland, OR "Don’t ban high-performance vehicles, ban low-performance drivers!"

Response:

Hi Craig, fancy seeing you here! You’re probably right. If you want to do the necessary work, locate some similar combinations that have just sold, then research the price range for each of the parts. Remember to compare items that are in similar condition.

If you aren’t in a big hurry to sell right away, setup some searches for the items you want to sell, then have eBay email you daily with new auction listings that match of your searches. As you look at each new (active) auction, if it is an item (or lot) similar to the one you want to sell, add it to your watch list. Then, after the auction closes, print out the page. In a month or two you will have some really good data on what these items currently *sell* for on eBay, much better data than you can get by searching active auctions (haven’t closed/sold yet) or closed auctions (you can’t search on body text, making it really hard to find good matches if the titles aren’t sufficient to find the items that match what you have). FYI: I bought a "mint" used Canon 70-200L IS USM f2.8 after following the active auctions this way for several months. I got it for one of the lowest selling prices I’ve seen in 6 months (missed one better deal that was BIN’d before I saw the auction) for $200 less than from B&H. jc

At this point I’m thinking I’ll break up the set, but after all the ads are up I’ll go back and add cross-reference links between them. That way if someone does want the whole set (or some subset) they can bid on the individual auctions. — Craig Wagner, craig.wagner(at)comcast.net Portland, OR "Don’t ban high-performance vehicles, ban low-performance drivers!"

ADVICE: (unsolicited) record the serial numbers of the body and lenses and wherever a number appears. Should you get someone who claims there is damage or it is not working, at least you can prove whose camera it is.

I’d say sell them separate. While you will have higher listing fees and higher final value fees, I think the items in total will more than make up for it. For instance, someone may not like the camera but they love the lenses. Or they hate the lenses and the filters but love the camera. If they like them all, they’ll bid on them all and you can ship them all at once, anyway. I will say I’ve never sold or been interested in camera equipment, but I have sold other things in pieces and got a lot more money for them.

I have been toying with the best way to list an older CANON AE 1. I feel I may get more listing it as a package. ADVICE: (unsolicited) record the serial numbers of the body and lenses and wherever a number appears. Should you get someone who claims there is damage or it is not working, at least you can prove whose camera it is. I had a "gentleman" go fishing on a purchase he made from wit an item that has a S/N. He maintained it was not working, and when I asked for the S/N number of the item, he then WAS NOT SURE if it was the one I sent to him….. Never heard another "peep" about it. the 3 most honest people in the world are: ME, YOU and EVERYONE ELSE, however I am not sure about the last two! h — In the words of the IMMORTAL USED CAR DEALER: THERE IS AN ASS FOR EVERY SEAT!

Response:

The weaknesses are the plastic tanks and plastic impeller on the water pump. It turns out that the hot coolant eats away at the plastic parts (while working to preserve the aluminum parts). The impeller blades get smoothed off, causing the pump to fail. The tanks on the radiator will eventually rot away, and the common failure is that the inlet hose breaks off. Replacing the water pump with one that has a metal impeller will fix one problem, and getting a radiator with metal tanks will fix the other. You should also take a close look at the fan clutch. If this part is weak, the fan will not spin properly at low speeds, and the motor will overheat.

Good stuff Jeff, The only additional caveat I would add is that the thermostat housing is also plastic which degrades with the same heat / cooling cycles, but can inexpensively be replaced with an aluminum after-market one. -Fred
