Most of the action is on mailing lists. There’s the original Minolta Mailing List, you can now get details (and read it) on the web at <http://www.minmail.org/. Thats had a few problems recently and a lot of people are using e-groups now <http://www.egroups.com/. — Barry —— (Obsolete sig deleted).

I am debating between buying a Minolta Maxxum 800si or the Minolta MaxxumXTsi. I would like to know if anyone has experience with either of these cameras. This will be my first 35mm camera. Thanks, Carolyn

I have tried many of the si Minoltas (we have different names for them in UK) I don’t know exactly what you have in mind but the 800si is a gem. In US its called a Maxxum – buy secondhand with a guarantee and get a decent zoom say 75mm to 300mm and you will have a great kit for a starter. It will most likely come with 35mm to 70mm as standard. You can email me with any questions best of luck Kevin Barrett

Both seem to be pretty good, check the page at http://www.minoltausa.com to see a comparison of the specs. I use a si model myself only because the 800 is a little much for me to justify. However the 800 seems to have very complete specs. Jeff

If this is your first SLR camera, invest in Nikon rather than Minolta. Nikon is always more expensive, but it preserves value more and longer than other brands do. Jonathan Lai
Too bad this was a question of which model of MINOLTA camera to purchase, rather than a question about what camera brand holds its value longer. Besides, rare gold coins make a better investment than cameras – most people buy their cameras to take photos, not fill out their investment portfolio.

I think this thread is about photo equipment -specifically which Minolta to buy. The idea of holding value with a 35mm slr is dumb – buy stocks to hold value, cameras to take photos. get it ?

Nonsense. All camera gear, other than collectable types such as Leica is a poor investment opportunity. As for resale values, Ebay has put paid to poor resale prices. Not an issue. Anyway, if it WERE true, and I don’t believe it is, then it makes buying used equipment rather more advantageous does it not? Simon

Carolyn, If this is your first 35mm camera, I’d probably go with the XTsi with a good lens like the 28-105mz or the 24-85mz. This would keep things simple. OTOH if you are technically inclined, the 800si has about everything you could want along with the same simple program modes as the XTsi. I have an 800si and will admit, I still have to go back to the manual for a number of settings I don’t use that often. Either way you can’t go wrong, but the 800si will allow you to grow into it as you learn more – just don’t get discouraged if you find you don’t use all it’s features.

Be aware that some Maxxum XT are lacking a wireless flash capability as opposed to its european versionDynax505siSuper (there should be a "WL" on the function dial) If you decide to get an XTsi check that out. I managed to find Maxxum XTsi with WL just 3 weeks ago in London Drugs Photo Dept. They also had Maxxum XTsi without WL. There is no change in name or price so make sure you get the right one. Personally I like that camera very much and consider wireless flash capability its best feature! Making indor pictures with build flash and wireless 3500si gave me very good results. it practically fool proof. _jacekZ

I own a 800si and I’m enthusiast. It has many features more than the XTsi. One that I particulary love is the possibility to record exposure data for up to 9 rolls, this allows you to improve your skills checking all data of good or bad photo, once it’s developed (I consider this feature really usefull not only for beginners). The 800si is more professional oriented (it’s been for a couple of year the only pro choice in Minolta catalogue) and will hardly make you miss an upgrade even if you become really serious in photo or, why not, a pro. My only advice is: buy the best you can afford saving enough money for lenses. For comparison and users reports check also the Minolta Mailing List on line, at http://www.minmail.org/ , the best way to get information about Minolta equipment. Hope to read you soon there as a new Minolta’s family member. — Ciao, Andrea

My wife bought me the XTsi for our anniversary. I thought it was a nice camera until I missed some very good shots of our 6 month old Golden Retreiver. I found it to slow in the auto-focus. I returned the XTsi and bought the 800si, what a difference. The 800si is quite a bit faster in auto-focus and I think muck more versital. It is almost twice the price though. Good idea if you’re buying a camera to sell instead of use
I’ve had both the 800si and XTsi. If you are going to get serious about your photography, get the 800si. The AF and motor are both a LOT faster than those of the XTsi, build quality is better, and you can get a real vertical grip. You said in a follow-on posting that you will be shooting horse shows I believe. This implies movement, and the 800si tracks movement very well. You also have more control over your shots with the 800si due to the seperate ambient and flash exposure compensation controls – missing on the XTsi. The XTsi is also missing any decent way to use it in a manual exposure mode. The metering display is almost useless in manual. The XTsi has a central cross AF sensor. I never noticed any real improvement in AF accuracy from it, but a couple of others have. I now have a 9 which has the same AF sensor arrangmenet of the XTsi, and it works fine, so I think it’s kind of a tossup. There are real differences between the two cameras in terms of speed and capability, with all the points going to the 800si. If you buy it, you won’t be disappointed. Both are fine cameras, but the XTsi is not something to base any part of your living on. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -If this is your first SLR camera, invest in Nikon rather than Minolta. I liked the usefull features of the 800 as much as any camera I have ever used (though I haven’t used an XTsi). It has real world advancements that you will not likely ever outgrow. It was on my short list when I was picking a system. As someone else pointed out, make sure you don’t blow your budget on the body and cut it thin on lenses. The lens is paramount to picture quality, and Minolta has some great ones. Quantum Mechanics…. The dreams stuff is made of.

There doesn’t seem to be much there other than a few pictures. Am I missing something? Before you buy.
