Need Feedback on This N90s System from Nikon Users Please

Question:

For what it’s worth, here are some of my opinions…based on using Nikon equipment for almost 30 years… Nikon is a good choice. Canon makes a good product too (I have used both systems) but I prefer Nikon for better construction in both camera bodies and lenses. The F-100 IS available now. I bought one almost 2 weeks ago and love it. While the N90s is a fine camera, the F-100 is everything the N90s SHOULD be…better constructed, faster. SB-28…good flash, but check it out before you take it out of the store. Many of these units have been plagued with a bug…the flash randomly fires when it is turned on, and sitting on the camera. 16mm…never used one. 20mm…great focal length to own, good lens, but not as sharp as the 24. 50mm…very good lens. 35-70…excellent lens but in my opinion, 35-70 is a bit limiting considering its price tag. Unless you really need the 2.8 max aperture (remember, you ARE buying a 50 1.4), consider the new 28-105 f3.5-4.5 75-300…decent optics for a zoom of this type, somewhat cheapo construction of the barrel though. 80-200…first rate. The best lens you have mentioned. Here is what I presently own: 20-35 F2.8 28-105 F3.5-4.5 80-200 F2.8 24 F2 manual focus 35 F1.4 manual focus (great lens) 50 F1.4 auto focus 105 F2.5 manual focus (a legend) 300 F2.8 manual focus (another great lens) Jay

Response:

Hi Chris, The big question is what type of photography do you do? Second, should have a use for each lens you buy. May I suggest  80-200 f2.8  35-70 f2.8  20 or the 24 not both.  What you are missing is a macro (micro) lens. I guarantee that will keep you busy for months.  After that time you will have a better idea of which aditional lenses you want. -Bob – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Hey all, I have researched a camera system for many months, and I have decided to go with Nikon.  I’d like to get user’s feedback on the items that I have chosen for my rig.  I do know about the new F100, but that wont be readily available for some time, and I would not mind adding it down the road in a few months. Here’s what I have decided to get.  Please give me your input, and any other suggestions.  Thanks in advance.  Please email the group as well as me directly N90s w/MB10, MF26, and SB28. N70 as a back-up. 16mm f/2.8 AF fisheye 20mm f/2.8 AF or 24mm f/2.8 AF 50mm f/1.4 35-70mm f/2.8 75-300mm f/4.5-5.6 (This I feel may be redundant) 80-200mm f/2.8 w/collar As well as a selection of filters, the correctional eyepiece, and a few lights.  Thjis is probably a $4-5k investment, but I feel for the money, it packs the most punch. Thanks again,

N90 and N70 are very different; you might be better off with a cheap S/H Nikon (FM2?) as a backup body, especially if you plan on getting an F100 soon. : 16mm f/2.8 AF fisheye Very specialised lens; I doubt you’ll use it enough to make it worth the price.  Try buying a Sigma, or something cheap, and see if you use it. : 20mm f/2.8 AF or 24mm f/2.8 AF There’s a long gap between these and the 50mm; I’d get a 35mm prime in addition. : 50mm f/1.4 : 35-70mm f/2.8 : 75-300mm f/4.5-5.6 (This I feel may be redundant) : 80-200mm f/2.8 w/collar I’d drop one of the zooms and get a 100mm macro lens instead. Actually I’d drop the 50mm and all the zooms bar the 80-200, and get a 35mm 1.4, an 85 f2, and a 100mm macro instead. But YMMV. Will

Hi Bob I’m considering getting Nikon 105/2.8 macro with N90S.Since you’re a Nikon user I would like to hear your opinion about this combination. I use mostly medium format and rarely Leica R7 with a couple of lenses.Since Leica’s and Hassy’s macro lenses are simply out of my reach I’ve decided to take a "shortcut".In the past I’ve used Canon’s 100 macro which was very good, this time I’m leaning towards Nikon because I like N90S. I would like to use this lens mostly for photographing flowers at available light. Also, any extension tubes recomended? Jan

Response:

If you are new in photography, you probably do not need a backup body for a short term (1 year).  So, why don’t you use the money for lenses. 20-35/2.8D, 35-70/2.8D,80-200/2.8D, and 105/2.8D.  Get N90s w/ MB-10 and SB-28 (no bug one).  Good LowePro bag, good tripod and a ball head.  Monopod also a good choice for light travel.  Lastly, lots of films/slides.  The total is around $4500 new. I went through a similar process about a year ago to prepare for a trip to the Serengeti.  Some comments after a year of living with my choices.: 1) I also got an N90S and an N70 as backup.  However, I ended up using both bodies pretty much all the time, with different lenses attached — on game drives you never know whether the next great shot will be 100 feet away, or a leopard sniffing the tires of your LandRover.  The N70 built-in flash was handy for fill-flash.   The only real problem is that the controls of the ‘90 and ‘70 are very different in style but not in feel (buttons/wheels are in same places, but they do different things on the different bodies).   This makes it difficult to simply pick up the ‘backup’ and use it quickly.  I found it easy to get confused about which body I had in my hands at any time.  In non-trip mode, I use the 90s almost exclusively — and I know I’ll have trouble getting used to the 70 controls if I have to use it as a backup.  When you add up the cost of lenses, if I did it again I’d get a second N90S as a backup. 2) I have the 80-200/2.8 and took the majority of pictures with it. It is a great lens.  Also the 300/4 for a longer reach, and TC-14B. Again, great lens. 3) I also got the AF20/2.8 and it is superb — so much so that I thought I’d have to pry it out of the hands of our balloon pilot after he took some pictures with it.  But if I had to do it again, I’d get the 20-35/2.8 zoom; there’s a lot of times when 20 is just a bit too wide 4) I highly recommend the 60 AF micro.   I use it as my ‘normal’ lens instead of a 50.   I don’t miss the 1.4 speed — typically you don’t shoot wide open anyway. 5) I have an SB-28 and haven’t used it enough yet to really understand it — but every picture I’ve taken with it seems to be just about perfectly exposed.   You can do a lot of special effects and creativity with it, but if you just let it do its own thing, the results are very acceptable. Hope this helps.  Check out also the equipment discussions on photo.net if you haven’t already — http://www.photo.net — that’s where I did a lot of my research last year. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -Hey all, I have researched a camera system for many months, and I have decided to go with Nikon.  I’d like to get user’s feedback on the items that I have chosen for my rig.  I do know about the new F100, but that wont be readily available for some time, and I would not mind adding it down the road in a few months. I would think you’d want your back-up to have at least similar controls as your primary camera.  I think the N90s is excellent and will probably be my next purchase.  However, I’m currently using the N90 and am very happy with it.  If price is the major consideration for going with the N70, why not look on EBAY or REH, etc. for a clean used N90 (controlls are identical and ability is not vastly improved in the N90s IMHO.)  Even an 8008s would feel more intuitive to an N90s user than the N70.  Would also like to throw in my vote for the 85 AF-D 1.8 lens.  This perspective seems to isolate exactly what my eye focuses on. Good Luck and let us know what you decide.  JLee – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Hey all, I have researched a camera system for many months, and I have decided to go with Nikon.  I’d like to get user’s feedback on the items that I have chosen for my rig.  I do know about the new F100, but that wont be readily available for some time, and I would not mind adding it down the road in a few months. You might consider something Micro, like the 60mm, or the 105mm if you want to combine it with a prime portrait lens. If wildlife is of any concern, you might want to think about a prime 300mm lens. I wouldn’t duplicate the zoom range of the 80-200 with the 75-300. But with all that great gear, couldn’t you get an F5 instead of the N90s? It’s a quantum leap in camera for only about a grand more. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Hey all, I have researched a camera system for many months, and I have decided to go with Nikon.  I’d like to get user’s feedback on the items that I have chosen for my rig.  I do know about the new F100, but that wont be readily available for some time, and I would not mind adding it down the road in a few months.
